Erasmus Mundus Scholarship 2026 — Open Programs, €1,400/Month & How to Apply

Erasmus Mundus funds a joint master's degree across 3+ European universities — full tuition, €1,400/month living allowance, and travel covered. Some programs have March and April 2026 deadlines still open. Here is the complete guide for Pakistani applicants.

AbroadMate Editorial·10 min read·Updated February 2026

Erasmus Mundus is one of the most generous scholarships in the world and one of the least applied to by Pakistani students — largely because people do not know it exists or assume it is only for European citizens. It is not. Pakistani students are eligible for every Erasmus Mundus Joint Master program.

The scholarship funds a master's degree delivered jointly by at least three European universities across at least three different countries. You spend your program moving between partner universities — studying in Germany for the first semester, France for the second, Belgium for the third, for example. Every year of study is financially covered.

What the Scholarship Covers

Tuition fees: Paid in full directly to the universities for the entire program duration. No partial coverage — full tuition regardless of the partner universities involved.

Monthly living allowance: €1,400 per month for the duration of the master's program (typically 2 years). This covers accommodation, food, transport, and living expenses in Europe.

Travel and installation allowance: A one-time travel allowance of €1,000 per year for students coming from outside Europe. This contributes to your return flights at the start and end of your studies.

International student top-up: An additional €1,000 per year specifically for students from outside Europe — bringing your annual non-tuition support to approximately €17,800 per year total.

Visa and insurance support: The host consortium provides guidance and sometimes direct support for visa applications and health insurance arrangements.

How Erasmus Mundus Works — The Joint Degree Structure

Unlike a standard scholarship where you attend one university, Erasmus Mundus programs are designed around mobility. You study at minimum two of the partner universities during your degree. At completion, you receive either a joint degree (one certificate issued on behalf of multiple universities) or multiple degrees from different institutions.

This structure means you will:

For Pakistani applicants specifically, this structure means your visa situation is managed across multiple Schengen countries. The consortium handles this — you do not manage individual country visas for each move within your program.

Programs With Open or Upcoming Deadlines in March–April 2026

Erasmus Mundus programs set their own deadlines. Most programs have primary scholarship deadlines between October and January, but a significant number have secondary or final deadlines in March and April 2026 for the September 2026 intake.

Check these programs for current open deadlines — verify directly at each program's official website as deadlines change:

EGEI — Economics of Globalisation and European Integration
Partners: University of Bordeaux (France), University of Hamburg (Germany), University of Bari (Italy), University of Wroclaw (Poland).
Field: Economics, international trade, European policy.
Pakistan-relevant deadline: March 30, 2026 for visa-applicant candidates. Apply at master-egei.eu.

EMIMEP — Electronics, Photonics, Microsystems
Partners: University of Limoges (France) + partners.
Field: Electrical engineering, photonics, telecommunications, computer science.
Deadline: Applications open through March 2026. Apply at erasmus-mundus.emimep.eu.
Eligibility: Bachelor's in electrical engineering, electronics, telecommunications, computer science, photonics, or physics.

GLOCAL — Global Local Justice
Partners: University of Glasgow (UK) + 6 other universities.
Field: Social sciences, policy, global justice.
Scholarship deadline: January 15, 2026 (closed). Self-funded places available until August 21, 2026. Worth noting for 2027 cycle preparation.

Search the full current catalog: The official Erasmus Mundus program catalog at erasmus-plus.ec.europa.eu lists every active program with links to each individual program's website. Use the filter to show programs with open applications. New programs are added annually — programs for the 2026-27 intake that opened in late 2025 may still have March or April deadlines for non-EU applicants requiring visas.

Full List of Fields Covered

Erasmus Mundus programs span virtually every academic discipline:

STEM: Computer science, software engineering, data science, AI, photonics, environmental engineering, renewable energy, marine science, food science, biotechnology, civil engineering.

Social sciences and humanities: Development studies, international law, human rights, economics, political science, cultural heritage, linguistics, translation.

Health sciences: Public health, health informatics, advanced oncology, nursing science, clinical pharmacy.

Business and management: Global supply chain management, food safety, maritime law and management.

Arts and creative fields: Music, visual arts, film studies (selected programs).

For Pakistani applicants, fields with the strongest scholarship competition are typically engineering, computer science, development studies, and public health — because these produce the most competitive applicants globally.

Eligibility Requirements

Nationality: Open to all nationalities. No country quota or restriction for Pakistani applicants. However, "geographical balance" is considered by some programs — meaning they try not to award more than 10% of scholarships to any one nationality. This rarely affects Pakistani applicants given the relatively small applicant pool compared to India or China.

Previous Erasmus Mundus scholarship: If you have previously received an Erasmus Mundus scholarship, you are not eligible for a second one. One scholarship per lifetime.

Academic qualification: A completed bachelor's degree by the time your program starts. Your bachelor's must be in a field relevant to the master's you are applying for. The relevance does not need to be exact — a computer science bachelor's applying to a data science EMJM qualifies, as does an economics bachelor's applying to a development studies EMJM.

Language: Most programs require English proficiency — IELTS 6.0–6.5 or equivalent. If your degree was completed in English at an HEC-recognised Pakistani university, many programs accept a letter from your institution confirming the medium of instruction in lieu of an IELTS score. Check each program's specific language requirements. The IELTS vs PTE vs Duolingo comparison can help you decide which test to take if required.

Grade requirements: Varies by program. Most require a strong bachelor's GPA. A First Class (75%+) from a Pakistani university is competitive. Upper Second Class (65–74%) is generally the minimum. Some programs are more selective — research individual requirements.

The Application — What You Submit

Applications are submitted directly on each program's online portal (not through a central Erasmus Mundus portal — each program manages its own applications). You typically submit:

Online application form: Personal details, academic history, professional experience, language proficiency, choice of specialisation/track if applicable.

Motivation letter: 1–2 pages explaining why you are applying for this specific program, what you will contribute, and your plans after graduation. This is equivalent to the personal statement for other scholarships — see how to write a personal statement that gets you shortlisted for structure guidance that applies directly to Erasmus Mundus motivation letters.

Academic CV: 2 pages maximum. List your education, relevant work and research experience, publications or presentations if any, and language skills.

Two letters of recommendation: One academic, one professional. Must be on official letterhead, signed, and submitted directly through the portal or by email from the referee's institutional address.

Academic transcripts: Official transcripts from your university — in English or with certified English translation. Pakistani university transcripts require HEC and MOFA attestation for most European programs. Start the attestation process before you start the application, not after.

Degree certificate: With HEC and MOFA attestation.

English language certificate: IELTS or equivalent, or a medium of instruction letter if applicable.

Passport copy: Biographical page.

How to Pick the Right Program

There are over 150 active Erasmus Mundus programs. Narrowing to the right one matters — a weak application to a highly competitive program beats no application, but a strong application to a well-matched program is far more effective.

Step 1: Go to erasmus-plus.ec.europa.eu/opportunities. Filter by "Students" → "Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters." Browse the full catalog.

Step 2: Filter by your field of study. Read each program's description, partner universities, and application requirements.

Step 3: Check deadlines immediately. Programs with past deadlines are off the table for this cycle. Note which programs have March–April 2026 deadlines.

Step 4: Read the program's student selection criteria carefully. Some programs explicitly value work experience, others purely value academic merit. Some have very specific background requirements.

Step 5: Choose one primary program to apply to with a strong, tailored application rather than submitting weak applications to five programs.

Erasmus Mundus is unique in offering multi-country experience and a joint degree that carries recognition across European institutions. If your goal is European employment after graduation, an Erasmus Mundus degree has significant recognition advantages. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply to multiple Erasmus Mundus programs simultaneously?
Yes — each program is independent, and applying to two or three programs in your field is common. Do not sacrifice quality for quantity — a generic motivation letter submitted to five programs will be weaker than tailored letters submitted to two.

Is there an age limit?
No age limit for Erasmus Mundus scholarships.

What happens if I am selected but cannot get a Schengen visa?
The consortium will provide a letter of acceptance to support your visa application. Erasmus Mundus scholarships are specifically recognised by European embassies as a strong basis for student visa approval. Refusal is uncommon but if it happens, contact the program coordinator immediately — they have experience supporting students through visa complications.

Are Pakistani universities' degrees accepted?
Yes — a bachelor's degree from any HEC-recognised Pakistani university is accepted. Ensure your degree is properly attested through HEC and MOFA before submitting.
