AbroadMate Editorial·10 min read·Updated February 2026

Applications for the Australia Awards Scholarship 2027 intake are open right now. The deadline is April 30, 2026 at 2:00 PM Australian Eastern Standard Time. No extensions are given. Applications submitted after this time are automatically rejected.

This is one of the most valuable scholarships available to Pakistani professionals — fully funded by the Australian government, covering every major cost for a master's degree at a top Australian university, with no bond or repayment obligation.

What the Scholarship Covers

The Australia Awards Scholarship is not a partial grant. It covers:

Full tuition fees — paid directly to the Australian university for the duration of your program.

Return economy airfare — from Pakistan to Australia at the start and back at the end of your scholarship.

Establishment allowance — a one-time payment to help with initial setup costs on arrival in Australia.

Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE) — a fortnightly living allowance for the duration of your studies. As of 2026, this is AUD $26,826 per year, paid fortnightly.

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) — full medical insurance for you and any accompanying eligible dependents for the duration of the scholarship.

Pre-course English tuition — if your language scores are below requirement but you are otherwise selected, Australia Awards arranges English training before your program begins.

Fieldwork allowance — for research students and coursework masters programs that include a compulsory fieldwork component.

Supplementary academic support — tutorial support if needed during your studies.

What Pakistan Offers in 2027

For the 2027 intake, Australia Awards Pakistan offers master's degree scholarships only (no bachelor's or PhD for the Pakistan program). Fields of study are linked to Pakistan's Sustainable Development Goal priorities, with a particular focus on:

This does not mean your exact field must be one of these. It means your application must convincingly connect your chosen degree to one or more of these development areas. A master's in Environmental Engineering (water security), Public Policy (inclusive economic development), or Public Health (health systems) all qualify directly. A master's in Data Science qualifies if your application explains how you will apply it to development challenges in Pakistan.

Check the official Australia Awards Pakistan country profile at australiaawardspakistan.org for the specific list of priority fields confirmed for the 2027 intake.

Who Can Apply — Eligibility Criteria

Pakistani Citizenship and Residence

You must be a Pakistani citizen currently residing in Pakistan at the time of application. You cannot apply if you are currently living or working in Australia or another country. If you are studying abroad, you do not qualify.

Age

No formal age cap for the Pakistan program. However, Australia Awards prioritises candidates with professional experience who are in a position to apply their learning to Pakistan's development. Most successful candidates are 25–45 years old with established careers.

Work Experience

Relevant professional experience in the development field you are applying to is strongly preferred. Australia Awards is not designed for fresh graduates — it is designed for mid-career professionals who will return to Pakistan and use their qualification to contribute meaningfully. Typically, successful candidates have 3–10 years of relevant work experience.

Academic Qualification

You must hold a bachelor's degree (or equivalent). The degree must be relevant to your proposed field of master's study. A strong academic record — GPA equivalent to a B+ or above — significantly strengthens your application.

English Language Proficiency

Valid at 1 January 2027 (not 2026 — the results must remain valid through the program commencement):

If you have not yet taken IELTS, schedule it now — results take 3–5 days and you need them for the application.

Not Eligible If:

You are a serving military officer (former military who have transitioned to civilian careers are eligible).
You are married to, engaged to, or in a relationship with an Australian or New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.
You have previously received an Australia Awards scholarship and have not completed the mandatory two-year return obligation.
You are currently enrolled in an Australian institution or hold an Australian student visa.
You hold or are applying for Australian permanent residency.

The Selection Criteria — What Actually Gets You Shortlisted

Australia Awards Pakistan explicitly evaluates candidates on these six criteria. Your application must address each one.

1. Academic competence
Strong academic results in your bachelor's degree, plus any postgraduate qualifications. Evidence of academic publications, awards, or relevant training strengthens this criterion.

2. Work experience and relevance
Demonstrated professional experience in a field relevant to your proposed master's and to Pakistan's development priorities. The more senior and impactful your role, the stronger the application.

3. Leadership quality
Evidence that you have led teams, initiatives, or projects — not just participated. Promotions, management responsibilities, community leadership, or professional associations demonstrate this.

4. Potential for development impact
The most critical criterion. You must convincingly explain:

Generic answers about "contributing to Pakistan's development" fail this criterion every year. The assessors want to see a specific, credible, and achievable plan.

5. Return to Pakistan commitment
All scholarship recipients must return to Pakistan for at least two years immediately after completing their degree. Your application should reflect genuine intention to return — not reluctance. Candidates who show strong ties to Pakistan, established careers, family, and a specific post-graduation plan pass this. Candidates who appear to be using the scholarship as a migration pathway do not.

6. Gender equity and social inclusion
Applications from women, people with disability, and other marginalised groups are explicitly encouraged. This is not a box-tick criterion — it reflects Australia Awards' mandate. Female applicants from Pakistan, particularly those from outside major cities, are strongly encouraged to apply.

How to Apply — Step by Step

Step 1 — Create your OASIS account
All Australia Awards Pakistan applications are submitted through the OASIS (Online Application and Selection Information System) portal. Go to australiaawardspakistan.org and follow the link to create your account. Use exactly the name appearing on your passport — including all middle names.

Step 2 — Complete the application form
The OASIS application covers: personal details, academic history, work history, English proficiency, proposed field of study and university preferences, two referee details, and four major essay questions.

The essay questions are the heart of the application. They typically ask:

Each response should be 300–500 words. Write specifically. Name real organisations, real problems, real outcomes you have achieved. Avoid vague development language.

Step 3 — Prepare your supporting documents

Step 4 — Submit before April 30, 2026 at 2:00 PM AEST
The OASIS portal automatically closes at the deadline. Do not wait until April 29 — technical issues, upload failures, or slow internet are not accepted as reasons for late submission. Submit at minimum one week early.

Choosing Your Australian University and Course

You do not need a confirmed university offer to apply for Australia Awards. You nominate your preferred field of study and indicate preferred universities. Australia Awards works with you to match you to an appropriate institution after selection.

However, having a clear idea of which master's programs are available — and being specific about your preference — strengthens your application. Major Australian universities for development-related master's programs include:

Australian National University (ANU): Strong in public policy, international relations, environmental management, sustainable development.
University of Melbourne: Strong in public health, education, engineering, law.
University of Queensland: Strong in agriculture, environmental science, engineering.
University of New South Wales (UNSW): Strong in engineering, IT, business.
Monash University: Strong in public health, education, business.
University of Sydney: Strong across disciplines including medicine, law, engineering.

All Group of Eight universities participate in Australia Awards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for a PhD?
Not through the Pakistan program for 2027 intake — master's degrees only. Some programs offer research master's degrees (master's by research), which are different from PhDs.

My IELTS score is 6.0. Can I still apply?
You do not meet the minimum of 6.5. You have until April 30 to retest. Schedule your IELTS immediately — test dates in March and April are available. If you score 6.5 or above with no band below 6.0 before the deadline, you are eligible.

Can I choose any field for my master's?
Your proposed field must connect to Pakistan's development priorities. The connection does not need to be direct — but you must articulate it convincingly in your application. An application for an MBA that explains how you will use business management skills to improve inclusion in Pakistan's microfinance sector can qualify. An application for an MBA with no development connection does not.

Is there any bond or service requirement?
There is no bond or monetary obligation. The requirement is to return to Pakistan and reside there for at least two years after completing your scholarship. This is contractual — failure to comply can affect future Australian visa eligibility.
