IELTS vs PTE vs Duolingo 2026 — Which Test Gets You Where You're Going?
The right English test depends on where you’re going and what you’re applying for. Here’s the 2026 breakdown by country, cost, format, and acceptance for Pakistani students and professionals.
The question isn't which English test is best. The question is which test is accepted where you're going, for the purpose you're applying for.
This distinction matters more in 2026 than it did two years ago because Duolingo's acceptance has expanded significantly across universities while remaining restricted for government visa applications in key countries. The result is a three-way market where the right choice depends entirely on your specific destination and application type — not on which test is easier, cheaper, or faster.
This article maps out exactly which test works for which country and which purpose. Read the section for your destination first. The general comparison comes after.
By Country and Purpose — Start Here
Applying to UK universities or a UK student visa:
If your university accepts Duolingo for admission and it issues your CAS letter based on that result, you can apply for a UK student visa directly — no additional English test required. Over 150 UK universities now accept Duolingo for admissions, including several Russell Group institutions. However, the UK Home Office requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT) for certain visa routes — specifically for below-degree level courses and for settlement and citizenship applications. For most Pakistani students applying for a postgraduate or undergraduate degree at a Higher Education Provider (HEP), IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI are the safest choices because they are officially recognised as SELTs.
In practice: if your target UK university accepts IELTS, PTE, and Duolingo for admission, and you're applying for a standard student visa at degree level or above, any of the three works. If you're uncertain about your CAS situation, take IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI to cover both the admission and visa requirements in one test.
Applying to Canadian universities or for a Canadian study permit:
Canada's Student Direct Stream (SDS) — which previously required IELTS specifically — was discontinued in 2024. This means there is no longer any visa-related advantage to taking IELTS over Duolingo for Canada. The Duolingo English Test is accepted for Canada's standard study permit process. 90% of Canada's top universities by international student enrolment accept the DET for undergraduate admissions, and nearly half of English-medium graduate programmes accept it. For Canada, Duolingo is a genuinely viable option in 2026 if your specific universities accept it.
Applying to Australian universities or for an Australian student visa:
Australia does not accept remote, at-home English tests for visa purposes. For Australian student visas, you need IELTS Academic or PTE Academic — both of which require in-person testing at an approved centre. Duolingo acceptance is growing at Australian universities for admissions purposes, but it cannot be used for the student visa itself. For Australia, take IELTS or PTE.
Applying to US universities or for an F-1 student visa:
The US government does not require an English test score for F-1 visa applications — the visa officer relies on the university's own admission decision. For university admissions, Duolingo is accepted by over 95% of US News Top 100 Universities. IELTS and TOEFL are both widely accepted. If your target universities accept Duolingo, there's no visa-level obstacle.
Applying to German universities (Blue Card or study):
Germany does not accept Duolingo for visa or residence permit purposes. For German university applications requiring English proficiency proof, IELTS and TOEFL are standard. For German language proficiency required alongside English (for some programmes), separate tests apply. For Germany, take IELTS or TOEFL.
The Three Tests — What They Are and How They Run
IELTS Academic
IELTS is the most universally accepted English test in the world — recognised by over 12,500 institutions globally, and accepted by immigration authorities in the UK, Australia, Canada, and most Schengen countries. In Pakistan, IELTS is administered by the British Council and IDP at centres in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, and other cities.
The test has four sections — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — each scored on a 0–9 band scale. Your result is an overall band score plus four individual band scores. This granularity matters because many universities and visa requirements specify minimum scores per band, not just overall. A 7.0 overall with a 5.5 in Writing is not the same as a 7.0 overall with 6.5 in each section.
The Speaking section is face-to-face with a human examiner — either in person or via live video link for online versions. For applicants who find examiners unnerving, this is a real consideration. The paper-based test gives results in 13 days; the computer-based version gives results in 3–5 days.
Cost in Pakistan 2026: approximately PKR 35,000–40,000 depending on centre and test type.
PTE Academic
PTE (Pearson Test of English Academic) is fully computer-based and scored by AI. No human examiner involvement means no examiner-day variation and no face-to-face speaking pressure. Results come in 24–48 hours — the fastest of the in-person tests. PTE is widely accepted for UK and Australian student visas (as PTE Academic UKVI for the UK), for Canadian immigration, and by thousands of universities globally.
PTE scoring runs from 10 to 90, with a detailed skills breakdown. The AI scoring is consistent and predictable — there's no subjectivity in how you're marked on speaking or writing. For applicants who are strong technically but less confident in spontaneous speaking situations, PTE's format can work in their favour.
The test takes about 2 hours and includes Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking sections integrated into task types rather than separated into distinct sections. This integrated format means a single task can test multiple skills simultaneously — which requires specific preparation.
Cost in Pakistan 2026: approximately PKR 32,000–37,000.
Duolingo English Test (DET)
The Duolingo English Test is taken entirely online from home, in about 45–60 minutes, and costs $59 (approximately PKR 16,000). Results are available within 24–48 hours and are automatically sent to institutions you designate. You can send to unlimited institutions for free — unlike IELTS and PTE, which charge per institution beyond a small free allocation.
Scores run from 10 to 160. The test format is adaptive — question difficulty adjusts based on your answers. It includes a short video interview (1–3 minutes) that institutions can view alongside your score.
DET acceptance has expanded dramatically: over 5,000 institutions worldwide including 95% of US News Top 100 US universities, 90% of Canada's top universities, and 130+ UK universities. The limitation is visa-level acceptance — the UK Home Office does not recognise DET as a SELT, and Australia does not accept remote tests for visa purposes. For countries where visa authorities have their own English test requirements separate from university admission, DET may not be sufficient alone.
Head-to-Head on the Factors That Actually Matter
Cost: Duolingo wins decisively — $59 versus PKR 35,000–40,000 for IELTS or PTE. For applicants applying to multiple universities, the Duolingo unlimited score-sending is also an advantage over IELTS's per-institution fee structure.
Speed: Duolingo and PTE both give results within 24–48 hours. IELTS computer-based is 3–5 days; IELTS paper-based is 13 days.
Format difficulty: This is genuinely personal and depends on your strengths. IELTS Academic Writing requires two formal essay-style tasks — Task 1 (describe a graph, chart, or diagram) and Task 2 (argumentative essay). For applicants who find academic writing difficult, this is the hardest section of the hardest test. PTE writing is shorter and more integrated. Duolingo writing tasks are shorter still.
IELTS Speaking is face-to-face with a structured interview format — a conversation with an examiner across three parts. PTE and Duolingo speaking sections are recorded responses, no live examiner. For applicants who perform better without an observer, PTE and Duolingo have the edge.
Preparation materials: IELTS has the most established preparation ecosystem — British Council and IDP offer official materials, there are thousands of preparation books, and most IELTS prep centres in Pakistan teach to a predictable test format. PTE has good materials but fewer resources available in Pakistan specifically. Duolingo preparation materials are still developing.
Retake policy: IELTS and PTE can be retaken as often as needed, with results valid for 2 years. Duolingo can be retaken every 30 days with a maximum of 3 times per year.
The Pakistani Applicant Decision Tree
Use this to determine which test makes sense for your specific situation.
Going to Australia for study or PR → Take IELTS Academic or PTE Academic. No choice. Remote tests not accepted for Australian visas.
Going to UK for a postgraduate degree at a Higher Education Provider → IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI if you want one test to cover both admission and visa. Duolingo if your specific university accepts it for the CAS and you're not worried about the SELT distinction.
Going to Canada → Duolingo is a real option if your universities accept it. IELTS remains the safe choice if you want universal acceptance. Since SDS was discontinued, there's no longer a visa-level reason to prefer IELTS over Duolingo for Canada.
Going to the US → Duolingo, IELTS, or PTE all work for most universities. No visa-level English requirement. Choose based on cost and format preference.
Going to Germany or other Schengen countries → IELTS or TOEFL. Duolingo not accepted for German visa or university purposes in most cases.
Applying for professional work visas (not student visas) → IELTS is safest. UK Skilled Worker visa, Canadian Express Entry, Australian skills assessment — all accept IELTS and most accept PTE. Duolingo acceptance for employment immigration is limited.
Budget is a major constraint → Duolingo, if your destination accepts it. The PKR 16,000 versus PKR 35,000–40,000 difference is material.
Scores You Need — Reference Table for 2026
| Country / Purpose | IELTS | PTE | Duolingo |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK Student Visa (degree level) | 5.5–7.0 overall | 42–65 | Check CAS route |
| Canada Study Permit | 6.0 overall | 50 | 110–120 |

| Express Entry Canada (CRS) | 6.0+ per band | 59+ | Not accepted |
Exact scores vary by programme and institution. Always verify the specific requirement on the institution's official website — these figures are general benchmarks.
One Test or Two?
Some applicants end up taking two tests — one for university admission and one for visa purposes — because their chosen test isn't accepted at both levels. This is more common than it should be and is easily avoidable with planning.
The scenarios where you might need two tests: applying to a UK university that accepts Duolingo for admission but requires IELTS UKVI for a specific visa route; applying to an Australian university that accepts PTE for admission but where the visa authority requires IELTS Academic. In these cases, taking IELTS or PTE Academic UKVI from the start covers both admission and visa with one test.
If you're uncertain, take IELTS Academic. It is the most universally accepted test across both university admission and government visa requirements globally. It's the most expensive and the most demanding preparation-wise, but it never leaves you in a situation where you need to take another test.
Where to Take Each Test in Pakistan
IELTS in Pakistan: British Council centres: Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Faisalabad, Multan, Peshawar. IDP centres: Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, and other cities. Computer-based available at most centres. Paper-based at selected centres.
PTE in Pakistan: Pearson test centres: Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi. Computer-based only.
Duolingo: Taken from home — no test centre required. Requires a webcam, a quiet room, and a stable internet connection. Identity verification is done online.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Duolingo accepted for UK student visa purposes?
Not as a SELT (Secure English Language Test) directly. However, if your UK university accepts Duolingo for admission and issues your CAS letter on that basis, you may be able to apply for the student visa without a separate SELT — depending on your course level and institution type. For degree-level programmes at licensed Higher Education Providers, the university's own English assessment can satisfy the visa requirement. Confirm specifically with your university's international admissions office before relying on this route.
Which test is easiest to pass?
There's no honest answer that applies universally. Duolingo's shorter format and adaptive scoring makes it less taxing in total time spent, but the content isn't necessarily easier. PTE's AI scoring removes examiner subjectivity but the integrated task format requires specific preparation. IELTS Academic writing is the hardest section for most Pakistani applicants because of the academic essay format. Choose based on your strengths, not which test seems easiest in the abstract.
Are IELTS and PTE results valid for the same period?
Both are valid for 2 years. Duolingo results are also valid for 2 years. Most universities accept results taken within 2 years of your course start date, and most immigration authorities accept results taken within 2 years of your application date.
Can I use IELTS General Training instead of Academic?
IELTS has two versions: Academic and General Training. Academic is required for university admissions and for many professional immigration pathways. General Training is accepted for some immigration routes — UK settlement, Canada immigration — but not for university admissions. If you're applying to a university, you need IELTS Academic. If you're applying for Canadian Express Entry or Australian skilled migration, check specifically which version is required for that pathway.
How many times can I retake if I don't get the score I need?
IELTS and PTE: unlimited retakes with no waiting period. Duolingo: maximum 3 times per year, with a 30-day wait between attempts. There is no cap on retakes for IELTS or PTE — if you need to take it 5 times to reach your target band, you can.
