GKS Korea Scholarship 2026 for Pakistani Students — University Track Guide

The Global Korea Scholarship 2026 offers 2,000 fully funded seats — tuition, KRW 1,000,000/month living allowance, return airfare, and Korean language training. The Embassy Track for Pakistan closed February 25, but the University Track is still open. Here is the complete guide.

The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) — also known as KGSP, the Korean Government Scholarship Program — is one of the best-funded government scholarships in Asia. The Korean government invited 2,000 students globally in the 2026 cycle. Every selected student receives tuition, a monthly living allowance of KRW 1,000,000–1,500,000 (approximately $750–$1,100), return economy airfare, health insurance, one year of Korean language training, and a settlement allowance on arrival.

Important for Pakistani applicants: The Embassy Track for Pakistan had a deadline of February 25, 2026 — this has now passed. The University Track is still open, with deadlines varying by university. If you missed the Embassy Track, the University Track is your current path.

The Two Application Tracks — Which One Now?

Embassy Track (CLOSED for Pakistan 2026)

The Embassy Track operates through the Korean Embassy in Islamabad. Pakistan's 2026 Embassy Track deadline was February 25, 2026 at 6:00 PM KST. This track is closed for the current cycle.

Embassy Track selection process: applications submitted to Korean Embassy Islamabad → Embassy nominates shortlisted candidates to NIIED (Korea's National Institute for International Education) → NIIED conducts a second review → nominations forwarded to universities for final admission decision. Pakistani quota under Embassy Track: approximately 5–7 seats for graduate programs.

University Track (STILL OPEN — varies by university)

The University Track operates through direct application to participating Korean universities. Each university sets its own deadlines for the GKS University Track — many have deadlines in March, April, and May 2026.

University Track selection process: you apply directly to a Korean university using the GKS University Track application → the university selects candidates → recommends to NIIED for final scholarship confirmation. University Track for 2026 has 1,200 seats globally.

Action required: Go to the official Study in Korea website (studyinkorea.go.kr) and check the current GKS University Track deadlines for your target universities. Deadlines vary — some universities have already closed, others are still accepting applications.

Eligibility Requirements

Nationality

Must be a citizen of a country listed by NIIED. Pakistan is a designated country. Neither you nor your parents can hold Korean citizenship.

Age

For graduate programs (master's, doctoral, research): must be under 40 years old at the time of application. Specifically: born after September 1, 1986 for the 2026 graduate cycle.

Academic Requirements

You must hold a bachelor's degree (for master's applications) or a master's degree (for doctoral applications), or be expected to graduate before the program commencement.

GPA requirement — must meet one of:

For Pakistani universities, your transcript must show marks and division. A First Class (75%+) or High Second Class (65%–74%) from an HEC-recognised university typically meets the GPA requirement. A Third Class or Pass Grade does not qualify.

Health

Must be physically and mentally fit for the program. A medical certificate from a recognised hospital is required as part of your application documents.

No Prior Korean Government Scholarship

If you previously received any Korean government scholarship (GKS, NIIED, KOICA, etc.), you are ineligible unless you have completed the mandatory return obligation for any previous award.

Required Documents

Prepare all documents in parallel — some take weeks to obtain.

Application form: Available on studyinkorea.go.kr. Complete in English.

Self-introduction letter: 1–2 pages. Should cover your academic background, reason for choosing Korea and your specific university, career goals, and how the degree contributes to your career and Pakistan's development.

Study plan: 1–2 pages. Specific academic plan — courses you plan to take, research you intend to pursue, specific professors or research labs you are targeting, and how the degree connects to your career plans.

Two letters of recommendation: From professors or professional supervisors who know your work directly. Must be on official letterhead, signed, and enclosed in a sealed envelope with the referee's signature across the seal.

Personal medical assessment form: Completed by a licensed physician (not self-completed).

Official academic transcripts: For every university attended. Must be official (stamped by the university registrar's office), not student-printed copies.

Degree certificate(s): Official copies with HEC and MOFA attestation for Pakistani degrees.

TOPIK certificate (Korean language proficiency): Not required to apply, but having any TOPIK level (even Level 1) strengthens your application. Bonus allowance at Level 5 or 6.

Proof of language proficiency (for English-medium programs): IELTS or TOEFL scores if applying to programs taught in English.

Copy of passport: All biographical pages.

Proof of Pakistani citizenship (CNIC): Front and back.

Choosing Your University and Program

Under the University Track, you apply to one specific university. Choose carefully — you cannot apply to multiple universities through the University Track (unlike the Embassy Track where you can nominate up to three).

Top participating Korean universities for Pakistani students:

Seoul National University (SNU): Korea's premier public university. Strongest in engineering, natural sciences, agriculture, and social sciences. Very competitive.

Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST): Top STEM university in Korea. Strong in computer science, engineering, AI, and biotechnology. Most programs taught in English. Highly competitive.

Yonsei University: Strong private university in Seoul. Business, medicine, engineering, social sciences. Some English-taught programs.

Korea University: Another of Korea's top three private universities. Strong in business, law, and humanities.

Pusan National University: Major public university in Busan. Strong in engineering, marine sciences, and medicine. Less competitive than SNU or KAIST but still prestigious.

Sungkyunkwan University: Strong in engineering, IT, and natural sciences. Samsung Group has significant investment in SKKU.

Selection tip: For Pakistani applicants, KAIST is worth a direct application if your engineering or computer science background is strong — KAIST operates almost entirely in English and actively recruits international students. Korean language training is still provided but the degree itself can be completed in English.

The Korean Language Year — What to Expect

Almost all GKS scholars complete one year of intensive Korean language training before beginning their degree program, regardless of their Korean proficiency. The Korean Language Program (KLP) runs at a designated university — typically not the same university where you will complete your degree.

This year covers TOPIK Level 3–4 of Korean language skills and includes cultural orientation and university preparation activities.

If you achieve TOPIK Level 5 or 6 within the first 6 months of the language program, you skip the remaining 6 months and begin your degree in March of the following year rather than September. This is a significant time saving for highly motivated language learners.

Exemptions from the language year: Applicants accepted to programs taught entirely in English through the R&D Program or Global Network Program, or scholars who already hold TOPIK Level 5 or 6 before arrival.

Application Tips for Pakistani Applicants

Be specific in your study plan. The most common reason GKS applications fail from Pakistan: vague study plans. Naming a Korean university and saying you want to study engineering is not enough. Name the specific research lab, the specific professor's work you want to build on, and the specific thesis topic you are considering.

Research your target professor before applying. Email the professor directly (in English) before submitting your application, attach your CV and a one-paragraph summary of your proposed research, and ask if they are accepting new students. A reply expressing interest is not mandatory but significantly strengthens your application. Include a note in your application that you have contacted them.

Connect to Pakistan's needs. Korean universities and NIIED consistently note that the best applications show a clear connection between the Korean degree and the applicant's home country contribution. A water resource engineering graduate whose application explains specific water scarcity problems in their province of Pakistan has a stronger application than one who mentions "contributing to Pakistan's development" abstractly.

TOPIK, even Level 1, matters. Taking a TOPIK preparatory course and sitting Level 1 or 2 before your application demonstrates genuine commitment to Korea. It costs minimal money and a few weeks of study but signals seriousness to the selection committee.

Living in Korea on the GKS Allowance

KRW 1,000,000/month (approximately $750) is a liveable stipend in Korean university towns outside Seoul. In Seoul itself, accommodation costs KRW 300,000–600,000/month for university dormitory or shared housing, leaving KRW 400,000–700,000 for food, transport, and other expenses. Students consistently report managing comfortably on the allowance with modest lifestyle habits.

University dormitory is strongly recommended for the first year — it is significantly cheaper than private rental and places you within the university community.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Embassy Track is closed. Can I still apply for GKS 2026?
Yes — through the University Track. Check the deadlines for your target Korean universities at studyinkorea.go.kr. Some universities still have open deadlines in March–May 2026.

Do I need to know Korean to apply?
No. Korean language training is provided as part of the scholarship. However, any Korean proficiency (even basic) strengthens your application and reduces the adjustment period.

Can I work part-time while on GKS scholarship?
GKS recipients are permitted to work part-time with the agreement of their university and supervisor, but it is not encouraged during the language training year. During the degree program, part-time work may be possible subject to academic performance requirements.

Does Pakistan have a high success rate for GKS?
The Embassy Track quota for Pakistan is approximately 5–7 seats for graduate programs — highly competitive. The University Track has no country quota — each university selects based on academic merit. Pakistani students with strong STEM backgrounds have had consistent success through KAIST and POSTECH University Track applications.
