Schengen Visa Bank Statement 2026 — Exact Amount Required, Format & How Many Months

Germany requires €45/day, France €65/day, Spain €100/day. The amount, format, and how many months back your statement must cover all vary by country. Here is every requirement for a Schengen visa bank statement — and the mistakes that cause refusals.

The bank statement is the document most Pakistani applicants get wrong on a Schengen visa application. Not because they do not have enough money — but because they submit the wrong format, the wrong period, or with transaction patterns that trigger a refusal.

This guide covers every requirement: how much, how many months, what format, and what to avoid. If you are mid-application right now, this is the information you need before you visit the embassy.

If you have already been refused, the Schengen visa refusal codes guide explains exactly what the refusal code means and how to reapply.

How Much Money You Need — By Country

Schengen embassies publish a daily minimum amount you must demonstrate you can cover. The total required is this daily amount multiplied by the number of days in your trip, plus a buffer for emergencies.

Destination CountryDaily Amount10-day trip30-day trip
France€65/day€650€1,950
Germany€45/day€450€1,350
Italy€51.64/day (first day) + €36.67 (each subsequent day)~€380~€1,100
Spain€108/day (minimum €1,080 for any trip)€1,080€3,240
Netherlands€34/day€340€1,020
Belgium€95/day€950€2,850
Austria€100/day€1,000€3,000
SwitzerlandCHF 100/dayCHF 1,000CHF 3,000
Czech Republic€55/day€550€1,650
PolandPLN 300/dayPLN 3,000PLN 9,000

Spain has the highest requirement — minimum €1,080 regardless of trip length, and €108/day for the entire trip. Austria and Belgium are also high. The Netherlands is among the lowest.

The unwritten rule: Embassies expect you to show at least 1.5–2x the calculated minimum in your account balance. For a 10-day trip to Germany (€450 minimum), showing exactly €450 looks borderline. Showing €900–1,200 is comfortable. Visa officers look for financial cushion, not the exact legal minimum.

How Many Months of Bank Statements

Standard requirement: 3 months. Every Schengen country that specifies a period states 3 months as the standard.

Exceptions:

Practical advice: Submit 6 months even when 3 is stated. There is no rule against providing more. Officers can only review what you give them — 6 months of consistent income is always more convincing than 3 months, especially if the 3-month window has any irregularities.

What Format the Bank Statement Must Be In

This is where many Pakistani applicants make mistakes.

Accepted formats:

What is not accepted:

Language: The statement must be in English or accompanied by a certified English translation. Pakistani bank statements from major banks (HBL, MCB, UBL, Standard Chartered, Allied Bank) are already in English. Meezan Bank and some others issue bilingual statements. If yours is in Urdu only, get it translated by a certified translator.

What Transactions Raise Red Flags

Visa officers are trained to identify financial manipulation. These patterns on your bank statement increase refusal risk significantly.

Large deposits immediately before the statement period. A statement showing PKR 50,000 monthly activity for 5 months and then PKR 2,000,000 deposited one week before the statement was printed is a major red flag. Officers assume borrowed funds. The money needs to have been in your account consistently.

Round-number lump deposits with no clear source. A deposit of exactly PKR 1,000,000 or exactly $5,000 with no payroll or business explanation raises questions. Salary credits or business receipts with clear transaction descriptions are much more convincing.

Balance that exactly meets the minimum with no buffer. As explained above — showing exactly the minimum amount with no cushion is a weak application.

Account opened very recently. A bank account opened 1 month before your application with no prior history is suspicious. If you have multiple accounts, submit the one with the longest history, even if it has a lower balance.

Frequent large withdrawals leaving minimal balance. An account that regularly shows near-zero balance between deposits, even if the monthly credits are sufficient, suggests the money does not really remain available. Maintain a consistent positive balance.

If You Are Self-Employed or Run a Business

For salaried employees, the bank statement speaks for itself — salary credits appear monthly, the source is clear. For business owners, freelancers, and self-employed Pakistanis, you need to support the bank statement with additional documents.

Additional documents for self-employed applicants:

The combination of personal bank statement + business registration + tax returns creates a complete financial picture that is far harder to question than a bank statement alone.

Sponsored Applications — Someone Else Is Paying

If your trip is sponsored — by a host in the destination country, a company, or a family member abroad — you do not need to show the full daily amounts in your own account. Instead:

The sponsor provides:

You still need to show some funds in your account — even sponsored applications benefit from showing you have at least PKR 50,000–100,000 in your own account, demonstrating you are not entirely without resources.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to show the money in foreign currency or PKR?
Your account can hold PKR — the embassy converts using current exchange rates. You do not need a dollar or euro account. However, having a foreign currency account (FCY account at a Pakistani bank) in addition to your PKR account strengthens the application.

My salary is PKR 80,000/month — is that enough for a Germany visa?
For a 10-day Germany trip: you need to show approximately €450 (PKR ~140,000 at current rates). If your account consistently holds 2–3 months of salary (PKR 160,000–240,000), yes, this is sufficient. The officer assesses whether you have resources relative to a trip of this length, not an absolute PKR threshold.

Can I show a fixed deposit or savings certificate instead of a current account?
Some embassies accept fixed deposit certificates as supporting evidence but not as the primary bank statement. Your regular current or savings account statement is the primary requirement. A fixed deposit certificate alongside your regular statement shows additional assets.

How recent must the bank statement be?
The statement must be issued within 30 days of your visa application. A statement printed 2 months before your appointment is not acceptable. Get it printed the week of your appointment.
