UAE Golden Visa 2026 — All Categories, Exact Requirements & How to Apply

The UAE Golden Visa gives 10 years of residency — renewable, with no employer sponsor needed, and your family included. There are 11 categories covering investors, professionals, doctors, engineers, graduates, and students. Here is who qualifies and exactly how to apply in 2026.

AbroadMate Editorial·10 min read·Updated February 2026

The UAE Golden Visa is a 10-year renewable residency visa that requires no employer sponsor, no annual renewal, and no minimum days spent in the UAE to keep it active. Your spouse, children under 25, and domestic workers are all included under your Golden Visa.

Since it was expanded in 2022, the Golden Visa now covers 11 categories — from property investors and business owners to skilled professionals, doctors, engineers, university graduates, and outstanding students. The salary threshold for skilled professionals was reduced to AED 30,000/month, making it accessible to a much wider range of workers.

This guide covers every category, who qualifies, what the exact requirements are, and how to apply from Pakistan or within the UAE.

Why the Golden Visa Matters

Before the Golden Visa, every UAE resident depended on employer sponsorship — your residency was tied to your job. Lose the job, your visa cancelled within 30 days. Your family's residency cancelled too.

The Golden Visa changes this completely. Once issued, your residency is independent. You can be between jobs, start your own business, or take extended time outside the UAE without losing your residency status. For Pakistanis, this removes the single biggest vulnerability of UAE employment.

Category 1 — Investors in Public Investments

Who qualifies: Investors who deposit AED 2 million or more in a UAE investment fund approved by the Ministry of Economy.

Requirements: The investment must be in an approved investment fund. A letter from the fund confirming the investment value is required. The AED 2 million can be financed through a UAE bank loan — you do not need to invest all cash from abroad.

Duration: 10 years, renewable.

Category 2 — Real Estate Investors

Who qualifies: Property owners who own real estate in the UAE valued at AED 2 million or more.

Requirements:
The property must be valued at AED 2 million or more. A property valued below AED 2 million at the time of purchase does not qualify, even if market value has since increased — the purchase price or current mortgage-free equity is assessed. Mortgaged property qualifies if the equity owned (amount paid) is AED 2 million or more. A mortgage letter from the bank confirming the paid portion is required. Off-plan property (under construction) qualifies only if the paid portion is AED 2 million or more.

Multiple properties: If you own multiple properties and their combined paid value is AED 2 million+, you qualify — they do not all need to be with the same developer.

Documents: Title deed(s) from Dubai Land Department (DLD) or the relevant emirate land department, passport copy, property valuation letter (if needed to confirm value).

Category 3 — Entrepreneurs and Business Owners

Who qualifies: Two sub-categories:

A — Established business owners: Own a business in the UAE generating AED 1 million or more in annual revenue. Requires a trade licence, audited financial statements or bank statements confirming the revenue, and a letter from a UAE bank confirming the business's financial activity.

B — Startup founders with approved projects: Your startup must be approved by a UAE business incubator, accelerator, or technology park (such as Dubai Future Accelerators, Hub71 in Abu Dhabi, or a free zone authority). The business does not need to have AED 1 million revenue if it is officially approved/sponsored by one of these entities.

Category 4 — Skilled Professionals (Most Accessible Category)

Who qualifies: Professionals working in the UAE in specific priority fields with a monthly salary of AED 30,000 or more.

Priority fields as of 2026:
Doctors and healthcare professionals. Engineers (all disciplines). Scientists and researchers. Information technology professionals (software engineers, data scientists, cybersecurity, AI). Business and financial specialists. Legal professionals. Education specialists (at recognised institutions).

Requirements:
Active employment in the UAE in one of the listed fields. Monthly salary of AED 30,000 minimum (basic salary, not including allowances). Bachelor's degree or higher in the relevant field. Employment contract from a UAE employer. A recommendation letter from the relevant UAE government authority for your field (Ministry of Human Resources, Ministry of Health, or relevant regulatory body) — your employer typically assists with this.

For IT professionals specifically: A recommendation from the UAE Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) or equivalent. Many tech companies in Dubai and Abu Dhabi assist their senior employees with Golden Visa applications as part of their benefits.

This is the most used category for Pakistani professionals in Dubai. A software engineer, doctor, or engineer earning AED 30,000/month (approximately PKR 2.3 million or $8,165/month) in the UAE is directly eligible.

Category 5 — Outstanding Students (UAE University Graduates)

Who qualifies: Students graduating from UAE universities with a GPA of 3.75 or higher (equivalent to a first-class or distinction classification).

Requirements: The university must be a UAE institution listed in the Ministry of Education's approved list. GPA of 3.75 or above at time of graduation. Application must be made within 6 months of graduation.

This category is important for Pakistanis studying in UAE universities. Graduates of institutions like American University of Sharjah, University of Sharjah, Khalifa University, or NYU Abu Dhabi with strong grades can apply directly upon graduation — without needing a job offer.

Category 6 — Outstanding Students (Top International Universities)

Who qualifies: Students or recent graduates of universities ranked in the world's top 100 by QS World University Rankings or Times Higher Education with a GPA of 3.75 or higher.

Requirements: Degree from a QS or THE top 100 ranked university. GPA 3.75 or above. Application within 2 years of graduation.

Relevant for Pakistanis: This includes LUMS and other Pakistani universities only if they appear in the top 100 — as of 2026 none do. The category is primarily for graduates of UK Russell Group, US Ivy League, or equivalent institutions.

Category 7 — Humanitarian Pioneers and Volunteers

Who qualifies: Individuals recognised for significant contributions to humanitarian work, volunteering, or community service in the UAE.

Requirements: A recommendation from the Ministry of Community Development or a recognised UAE charity or government body. This category requires formal recognition rather than self-application — it is initiated through the recommending authority.

Category 8 — Frontline Heroes (Healthcare Workers)

Who qualifies: Doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare workers who made significant contributions during COVID-19 or other health crises in the UAE.

Requirements: Recommendation from the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP). This category was introduced in recognition of frontline workers and is not applied for directly — MOHAP initiates nominations.

Category 9 — Outstanding Scientists and Researchers

Who qualifies: Researchers and scientists recognised by UAE government scientific authorities including UAE Research, Development and Innovation Authority (RDI).

Requirements: Accreditation from UAE RDI or nomination from a UAE university or government research institution. Strong academic publication record or research contributions. PhD required.

Category 10 — Creative Sector Professionals (Culture and Arts)

Who qualifies: Artists, athletes, creative professionals, and cultural figures recognised in their field.

Requirements: Recommendation from the Ministry of Culture and Youth, UAE Sports Council, or equivalent authority. Evidence of awards, professional recognition, or significant achievements in the creative or sporting field. This is a nomination-based category — not self-applied.

Category 11 — Doctors and Specialists

Who qualifies: Doctors with a specialisation who are licensed to practice in the UAE and are employed in a UAE government or private hospital.

Requirements: UAE medical licence (issued by the relevant health authority — DHA in Dubai, DOH in Abu Dhabi, MOH elsewhere). Employment at a recognised hospital or medical centre. The specialisation must be in a field listed as high priority by the health authority.

How to Apply — Step by Step

If you are applying from within the UAE (employed):

Step 1: Your employer (if applying under the skilled professional category) typically initiates the recommendation letter from the relevant government authority. Confirm with your HR department whether they assist with this.

Step 2: Once you have the recommendation letter, submit your Golden Visa application through the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) portal at icp.gov.ae or through the GDRFA (General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs) in Dubai at gdrfad.gov.ae.

Step 3: Upload required documents: passport copy, Emirates ID, employment contract, educational certificates, salary certificate, and the authority recommendation letter.

Step 4: Biometrics if not already registered. Medical fitness test if entering on a new visa.

Step 5: Receive your Golden Visa — issued as a new UAE residency stamp and updated Emirates ID showing 10-year validity.

If you are applying from Pakistan (real estate or investment category):

Real estate and investment category applications can be started from outside the UAE in coordination with a UAE property developer or investment fund. The developer/fund provides the necessary documentation to initiate the ICP application. An entry permit is issued first, allowing you to enter the UAE for biometrics and medical tests before the 10-year residency is activated.

What Golden Visa Does NOT Give You

The Golden Visa is a residency visa — not citizenship. It does not give you the right to work as a freelancer without a separate trade licence or freelance permit. It does not give you voting rights. It does not lead to UAE citizenship through residence time alone (UAE citizenship through residency requires 30+ years of legal residence and is extremely rare for non-GCC nationals).

For sponsored employment, you still need a work permit — the Golden Visa removes the employer-tied residency but your work authorisation for a specific employer still comes from the labour contract.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for a Golden Visa without being in the UAE?
Real estate and investment categories can be started from abroad. The skilled professional category generally requires existing UAE employment and presence.

Does my salary of AED 25,000 qualify for the skilled professional category?
No — the minimum is AED 30,000. However, if you receive performance bonuses or other contractual compensation that brings your total package to AED 30,000/month on average, consult the relevant authority — some allowances may count.

Does the Golden Visa include domestic workers?
Yes — up to unlimited domestic workers (drivers, housemaids) can be sponsored under a Golden Visa holder, subject to standard domestic worker sponsorship requirements.

Can Pakistani passport holders get a UAE Golden Visa?
Yes — Pakistani nationals are eligible for all Golden Visa categories. Pakistani professionals in Dubai are among the most common Golden Visa applicants. There is no nationality restriction.
